The iPad 2 is a great device for our family member. He is able to use the iPad with SKYPE to communicate with friends and see what is going on in the kitchen. It is intuitively simple and the concept of what is going on appears to understandable to even with a family member with more advanced Alzheimer's. We use skype more frequently because it works with WI-FI & 3G cellular networks and FaceTime works with just WI-FI.
WebCam with Mobile App
We have implemented a webcam system with a couple of cameras and sound that can be monitored via the app named iCam
. Works over the Internet and supports up to four simultaneous sessions with sound and motion detection which can generate an email. App works on iphones and ipads as well as android devices. It works with Macs and PCs and you need a connection to the internet. A wireless homenetwork is a plus.
Motion Detector(s)
Alzheimer's family members will occasionally wander. This is unpredictable and can really cause harm and anxiety. We have setup a few "Doberman Security" cameras. They are battery operated and are simply positioned and turned on. They sense motion in a wide field that they sense and are very helpful in monitoring critical spots like doors and stairs.
The technology is not a replacement for constant vigilance, but it sure can help with relieving a bit of stress and projecting important information where you need it.
Reorder Prescriptions
With Alzheimer's there are prescriptions to be refilled. Walgreen's has developed the easiest to reorder app. Launch the app, scan the barcode, it is recognized and tells you when and where to get your prescription. It knows it's you so all you do is press accept and the order is complete.
